America faces many troubles and issues much like many any other country and is home to thousands of volunteer projects spread out across each of the fifty states. The versatile environments of the country including the extreme diverse climate, geography and wildlife of the USA means there are more unusual volunteer projects than in other, smaller countries where there is only one climate and less variety in wildlife or geography.
Read To Horses in Florida
There are over 33,000 wild horses running free in the United States. Many of these mustangs are rehomed at horse and wildlife sanctuaries across the country if they encounter trouble or are roaming on private land. Mustangs along with other wild animals can often go their entire lives without hearing a human voice, this means that when they are rehomed at a sanctuary they are scared and get spooked by humans which can be fatal. Veterinary visits are much more difficult and if the horses get stuck in difficult positions, they don’t allow humans to get close to them to help.
There are many horse sanctuaries across Florida which home wild mustangs with the aim to raise funds and purchase enough land for the horses to live wildly without the need of human contact. Until this day comes, volunteers help by sitting at the side of the horses’ stables reading aloud, getting them used to the human voice.
Care For Exotic Cats in Texas
Rescued Lions, Tigers and Leopards are all homed at an exotic cat sanctuary just outside Dallas, Texas. There may be more tigers kept as pets in the USA than there are in the wild in the rest of the world. Texas is thought to be home to the largest amount of pet tigers and other big cats but as most of these are bought illegally, no-one really knows how many are being kept as pets. Sadly, when these animals begin to grow up and are no longer smaller, less threatening cubs, owners abandon them or begin to neglect them.
InSync Exotics home over 70 felines, rescuing them from the pet trade and uncontrolled breeding in the USA. Unfortunately, these big cats have been in captivity for too long and because of this, they cannot be released back into the wild. Lions and tigers and leopards (oh my!) are kept at the sanctuary and volunteers help with diet preparation and feeding, cleaning enclosures, assisting in medication and vet care along with educating the public.
Protect Honeybees in Hawaii
Due to bees becoming more and more endangered, honey bee sanctuaries have been set up all over the world to help educate the public on beehives and how to protect this species. Volunteers are encouraged to assist with harvesting the honey from hives and caring for the honey bees on site.
Maui Honey Bee Sanctuary welcomes volunteers from all over the globe, to help save this endangered species, raising money for the sanctuary in a number of different ways: serving food and shaved ice to both locals and tourists at the road stand, making products out of the honey including lotion bars, candles, lip balms, jewellery and any other craft ideas.
Grape Picking in Texas
Learn everything to do with wine and see if you have what it takes to grow quality grapes in the Texas Hill Country at Robert clay vineyard.
Volunteers help at harvest time with the final pruning and harvest before turning the grapes into refreshing wine. If visiting during another time before or after the grapes are ready to harvest, there is still plenty to do! From farming and gardening to general maintenance and animal care, volunteers get stuck into all aspects of the vineyard: learning how to properly prune and tuck vines, applying and removing bird netting to protect the crops and weed control. Volunteers also learn about technical jobs such as walking the vineyards look for any disease issues, trellis repair and checking and repairing drip-lines. There is also the opportunity to get your hand dirty harvesting and processing the grapes and caring for and working with the wine.
Fight World Hunger in California
Taking advantage of the amount of food wasted in the United States, Gleanings For The Hungry send a wide variety of shelf-stable products like beans, rice, cereal, cooking oil, energy bars, muscle milk along with the fruit and soup they produce on site.
Process and ship food to approximately 100 impoverished nations. Depending on the length of each volunteers stay, there are different roles available. From gardening, building and cooking to shopping, house and charity work as well as helping on the eco project.
